Velocity of Time / 2022
In Velocity of Time, Tap Chan recalls, gathers,
and orchestrates a compilation of Japanese
advertisement clips from her childhood
memories in the 1980s and '90s—a period
when Japanese culture had a strong influence
in Hong Kong. Presented as a double-channel
installation, the work comprises a fast version
and a slow version of the video, both modified
from the original footage. The juxtaposition of the two versions elicits a romanticized
understanding of general relativity: because the
personal perception of time is distorted near the
wormhole, one may glimpse into it and discover
what eternity looks like.
