The Double-Slit / 2022
Hinted at its title, The Double-Slit is inspired by
the eponymous experiment in quantum physics
which demonstrates that light and electrons
possess particle and wave properties. On the three-panel wooden board resembling a
folding screen, Tap Chan embeds two slim resin
windows and attaches a sheet of white cushion
padding made of Tyvek to the surface. The form
of the work recalls the interior of a spacecraft
and that of an asylum simultaneously—both come
across as places unknown or unpredictable to
us. On the threshold of fear and security, Chan
explores the intersections between quantum
mechanics, lucid dreams, and schizophrenia.
