The Double-Slit / 2022
Solo Exhibition-Lime & Tangerine in a Wormhole
Hinted at by its title, The Double-Slit draws inspiration from the famous experiment in quantum physics, where light and electrons reveal their mysterious nature, behaving both as waves and particles. Crafted on a three-panel folding screen, with slender resin windows and a soft Tyvek cushion, its form evokes the quiet stillness of a spacecraft’s interior and the fragile uncertainty of an asylum—both spaces unknown, unpredictable, and on the edge of reality.
The double-slit experiment shows how particles can exist in many possibilities until observed, collapsing into one reality—as if the act of seeing changes what is real. This echoes the experience of mental illness, especially schizophrenia, where perception and consciousness shift, and reality can feel fragmented or elusive. Just as quantum particles blur the lines between states, so too can the mind wander between lucidity and confusion, between clarity and hallucination.
Chan’s work explores this fragile boundary, where science meets the human psyche, and where the mysteries of quantum mechanics resonate with the deep, often intangible experiences of mental health. It is a meditation on uncertainty, perception, and the delicate threads that connect the known and the unknown, fear and security, reality and dream.
