Cosmic Rays I & II / 2022
Solo Exhibition-Lime & Tangerine in a Wormhole
In Cosmic Rays I & II, an opaque beige-toned resin plate is softly illuminated by a lightbulb above. The choice of tangerine light connects to the color’s association with spacecraft and spacesuits, imbuing the work with meanings related to the cosmos, the future, and the realm of fiction. The plate’s shape resembles a wall mirror, evoking domestic comfort and inviting viewers to gaze into it. However, its semi-matte surface prevents clear reflections, creating an intriguing ambiguity. The companion piece features a similar setup but with green light instead of orange. The artist recalls encountering the green frequently in 1980s Hong Kong, associating it with the city’s past. The title, Cosmic Rays, prompts reflection on cognitive decline symptoms induced by cosmic radiation exposure. Metaphorically, the work reactivates the gradual memory loss experienced in space travel, probing the fear of the unknown states of body and mind. Together, the pair meld personal and collective memory, scientific phenomena, and cultural history into a meditation on cosmic and psychic uncertainty.
