Cosmic Rays I & II / 2022
Solo Exhibition-Lime & Tangerine in a Wormhole
In Cosmic Rays I & II, a semi-opaque beige-toned resin plate is softly illuminated by a lightbulb above. The plate’s shape resembles a wall mirror, evoking domestic comfort, self-reflection, and inviting viewers to gaze into it. However, its semi-matte surface prevents clear reflections, creating an intriguing ambiguity. The bulbs above carrie a mirror coating, reflecting the viewer from another angle and introducing a subtle interplay between parallel worlds. The piece features as a pair, one with tangerine light, the other in green. The artist recalls encountering the green frequently in 1980s Hong Kong, associating it with the city’s past. And tangerine representing nostalgia.
The title Cosmic Rays draws inspiration from the dementia-like cognitive impairments associated with long-term exposure to cosmic radiation. Metaphorically, the work imagines the gradual memory loss experienced in space travel, probing the fear of the unknown states of body and mind. In parallel, the work reflects the fear of losing personal memory and collective memory related to homeland. The work weaves scientific phenomena and cultural history into a contemplative field of cosmic and psychic uncertainty.
