Appearance // Disappearance / 2021

Dreams and internet are similar, they are both areas where repressed conscious mind vents.

Technological advancements are often hailed as gateways to utopian improvements in our lives. Yet today, we grapple with anxiety over how these same technologies have plunged us into a crisis of privacy and secrecy. Inspired by the pervasive experience of everyday surveillance, Appearance // Disappearance takes the form of security mirrors that reject being watched. With their surfaces obscured, these mirrors conceal vision rather than reflect it.

While some view surveillance as a path to utopia—reducing crime and enhancing control—others fear it signals the erosion of our humanity. Appearance // Disappearance acts as a metaphor for counter-surveillance, embodying the collective fear of overexposure that defines our digital age. These forms resemble monsters creeping out from the walls, symbolizing the inescapable presence of algorithms and AI systems that monitor us constantly through the internet and mobile apps.

In this relentless surveillance, AI knows more about us than we do ourselves—or even our closest friends and family.
